QOTD – 10th Oct 2007

After the intense and enlightening discussion on an earlier post – An Unquiet Mind Over Matter – I couldn’t help resist sharing today’s Quote of the Day from The Quotation’s Page. It’s a perfect rejoinder that serves a sumptuous dessert of humor!

Those who believe in telekinetics, raise my hand

  1. Mahendra: I couldn’t help but notice you use American spelling. 🙂 For humour.

Also I couldn’t help but notice you use an inadvertent tautology (c.f. help resist?).

  2. Shefaly: Thanks. I have always preferred American spelling. I’m not sure if I use it consistently for all words, but I try.

Good catch about the redundancy! That is one of the glaring weakness in my writing. I’ll leave it there so your comment makes sense to other readers. 🙂 Thanks again.

  3. I remember during my school years i was frightened after reading Stephen King’s Carrie. That is the frequently banned book in US schools.
Now, I guess i will believe telekinetics only when i personally see or experience it like you did.

  4. Mahendra: I think it was not banned for being scary; probably for just being un-Christian. Harry Potter (one or more) are also on the top-100 banned books in the US… Go figure, as they say. 🙂

  5. Mahendra,

It’s been a long time since I saw the usage “…couldn’t help but notice…”. I have become so accustomed to “…couldn’t help noticing…”, that I had all but forgotten about this construction. Incidentally, shouldn’t it be followed by “used”, in both styles?
